studios1.ca history
13 years - filled with the laughter of thousands and thousands of students - flies by quickly when you are having fun!
In 1996/97 Gabby (Gabreïl Spiegelschrift) became part of the Dancing on King faculty where, along with teaching the multilevel Social Ballroom and Latin Classes, his highly popular Tap Dance Classes (later the Urban Tap & Stomp) and the infamous Sunday Swing courses made him a fixture in the Toronto Social Dance and Swing Revival Scene. His eclectic traditional and classical training allowed him a unique and refreshing approach that provide both historic and cross referential ideas to heighten the joy of dancing.
Initially focused on the 40/50’s swing, the Sunday “Sinful” East Coast Swing classes quickly expanded to include the earlier swing styles accompanied by Gabby's forte in early and vaudeville tap dancing. By 1998 the Sunday classes were being offered on Mondays as well! At the same time his courses at the Toronto Board of Continuing Education developed into children’s classes designed for students kindergarten through secondary in both the public and private Toronto School Boards before guest teaching in other schools across Ontario.
As teaching engagements and projects would have him moving through out Canada and abroad, in 2006 studios1.ca was created to separate the dance course information from Gabreïl’s professional dancetheatre THEVARS.
A relocation to Montréal set in motion the 2009 inclusion of classes from the former Marianopolis Community Recreation. Taught by some of Montréal’s leading dance professionals and instructors, studios1.ca continues the Pilates and Children’s Dance, along with the Social Dance programs, at the beautiful Marianopolis College.
